Coral Gables Neighborhood Guide
Coral Gables is an incorporated city, legally distinct from the City of Miami, planned and developed by George Merrick beginning in the early 1920s. Its Mediterranean Revival architecture, designated trees, canopied boulevard system, and specific design standards continue to be enforced through the city's own Board of Architects, making it one of the most architecturally regulated municipalities in South Florida.
The City Beautiful: a planned city with its own rules
Coral Gables is located south of Downtown Miami and Brickell, west of Coconut Grove, and north of Kendall. It is bordered by US-1 (Miracle Mile to the north), Red Road (SW 57th Avenue), and the Tamiami Trail. The University of Miami campus occupies a significant portion of the city's southeastern quadrant. Coral Gables has its own street naming system: avenues and streets follow a hierarchical naming convention from the city's original platting.
