Miami Beach Neighborhood Guide
Miami Beach is an incorporated city, legally separate from the City of Miami, situated on a barrier island between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It encompasses multiple distinct sub-areas, including the landmark Art Deco Historic District in South Beach, the mid-island neighborhoods around the convention district, and the more residential character of North Beach.
Barrier island living with a layered identity
Miami Beach stretches roughly seven miles from Government Cut in the south to the Broward County border in the north. Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Ocean Drive are the principal north-south corridors in South Beach; further north, the character shifts substantially. Causeways connect the island to the mainland at multiple points. Being a barrier island, Miami Beach has a different regulatory and flood-risk context than mainland areas.
